A Message from the CHS English Department
Carencro High’s English Department firmly believes that a summer reading program can be an effective educational extension of the school year. We hope that students discover, develop & nurture a love for reading that is carried forever. We also hope that parents & guardians take this opportunity to discuss book selections and nurture the act of reading.
Research indicates that a love for reading is inspired when adolescents independently select their own reading material. With this research in mind, we offer students total freedom with choosing their reading selections this summer. Enjoy! |
GUIDELINES
- Choose book titles that are appropriate to your age, interest, and reading ability.
- As you read, maintain a dialectical journal following the instructions on the next page.
- Have your dialectical journal with you and ready to submit to your English teacher within the first two days of school.
- If your dialectical journal is complete, you will receive full credit.
- If your dialectical journal is incomplete or should you choose not to participate, you will not be penalized.
- Your English teacher has the option to assign an additional activity related to your summer reading.
Instructions for a Dialectical Journal
You can download and print a journal page by visiting www.carencrohighschool.org! Otherwise, follow these directions:
- Write your name, the title of the book, and the author at the top of the page.
- Split the page vertically making three columns.
- Write a quote on the left side of the page in the first column.
- Write the page number of the quote in the middle column.
- Write a response to the quote in third column. You are wanting to share why you find the quote interesting or why you see it as being important. Your responses could begin with phrases such as:
I wonder… I feel… This character reminds me of… I predict…
- Respond to a minimum of 10 quotes.
